The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin is now receiving applications for the 2010-11 William and Madeline Smith Research Travel Awards.

Five fellowships of up to $1,000 each will be awarded, and the aid may be used any time from Sept. 1, 2010 to Aug. 31, 2011.

Through the Smith Travel Award, the Briscoe Center helps master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral students with costs associated with travel to Austin. The award is intended for students who need to conduct in-depth research in the holdings of the Briscoe Center and who live outside the Austin metropolitan area. Smith Award recipients will contribute to knowledge of the Briscoe Center’s collections by writing an essay about the materials they used in their research at the center.

Applications must be postmarked by July 31. More application information and forms are available online.

The Research and Collections Division in Sid Richardson Hall is the Briscoe Center’s main research facility and the repository for the vast majority of the Briscoe Center’s collections. Research collection strengths include: the American South, Civil Rights and Social Justice, Congressional and Political History, Energy and Natural Resources, the Archives of American Mathematics, Military History, Music, News Media History, Photography, Texas History, Professional Touring Entertainment History, University of Texas History and Western Americana.
