Six individuals and two organizations were honored by The University of Texas at Austin for their commitment to serving the Austin Hispanic community in the areas of education and media.
An awards ceremony sponsored by the Office of the President and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement was held Sept. 27 at the Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin and attended by 300 people.
The six individuals honored were Olga Campos, KVUE-TV; Fred Cantú, Telemundo; Arnold Garcia, Austin American-Statesman; Augie Garrido Jr., The University of Texas at Austin; Ron Oliveira, KEYE-TV; and Ramona Treviño, Austin Independent School District. The River City Youth Foundation and Univision Austin were the two organizations honored.
H-E-B was given the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Legacy Award for its long-term commitment to charitable programs throughout Texas, many of which support educational opportunities for children and young adults. Subiendo: The Academy for Rising Leaders was also recognized for its initial work providing outstanding Hispanic high school students with leadership opportunities.
“This is a remarkable group of educators, citizens and organizations. Through their leadership and dedication, they have enriched the entire city of Austin,” President William Powers Jr. said. “And through their example, they have inspired new generations of young people to play an active role in strengthening our community.”
Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement, said, “It is a privilege to honor leaders in the community who make a huge difference in others’ lives every day-people who enrich the lives of young people and make Austin the desirable community it is.”
