Background: National Young Women’s Day of Action (NYWDA) is dedicated to the political activism of young women. NYWDA is organized for young women by young women, with the goal of encouraging local political involvement and providing a forum for raising awareness about issues that range from reproductive rights to gender, sexual and racial equality.
Rajasvini Bhansali, known as Vini, is the executive director of International Development Exchange, a leading social justice grant-making organization that supports grassroots organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Vini was chief operating officer for a nationally renowned social enterprise and youth development organization, Juma Ventures. A native of India, she earned a master’s degree in public affairs with a focus on technology and telecommunications policy from the Lyndon B. School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. She holds bachelor’s degrees in astrophysics and interdisciplinary studies from the University of California, Berkeley. She serves on the board of CUSO-VSO, an international volunteering organization, and is the co-founder of Sukuma for Opportunities, an organization that supports youth development in East Africa. Vini has worked as a community organizer on refugee and immigrant rights in Texas and California and is also a published poet and essayist.
