Dr. Patricia Carter, associate professor of nursing at The University of Texas at Austin, has received the “Faculty of the Year” award from the Texas Nursing Student Association (TNSA).

The award, which is given to a Texas nursing school faculty member for mentorship, involvement and professional role modeling, was presented at the association’s recent convention in Galveston.

“Dr. Carter treats her students like family,” said one student in her nomination. “Her form of teaching goes beyond a PowerPoint presentation. She is an example of what nursing research is outside the classroom.”

Carter, whose research involves promoting quality of life for family caregivers of persons with chronic illnesses, teaches one of the school’s research courses.

TNSA represents more than 3,000 student nurses preparing to become registered nurses. The 18 university School of Nursing students who attended the convention also won first place in the “brain bowl” competition, which tested their nursing knowledge.
