Event: John-Mike Reed of Handmade Music Austin will guide a do-it-yourself music innovation workshop in the Visual Arts Center‘s (VAC) Arcade gallery. Workshop participants can purchase kits on-site to construct their own PicoPaso, a stepped tone noise synthesizer designed by Reed. Following the workshop, there will be a short discussion on digital and analog circuitry and live music performance by Reed that is free and open to the public.

Travis Weller of Austin’s New Music Co-op will present a composition using the architecture of the VAC. The steel awning of the VAC’s Kayem Arbor will be turned into a musical instrument using piezo microphone contact amplification. Line Upon Line percussion trio will play the steel components of the Arbor, allowing their natural resonant sounds to be diffused by loudspeakers. The resulting music will bring the architectural element to life and allow the audience to experience the space in a new way. Performance is free and open to the public.

When: Friday, March 11, 6-9 p.m.

Where: Visual Arts Center in the Art Building (ART).

Background: Sound + Vision aims to promote experiments in sound, video and performance. Each program is designed to complement and enrich the contemporary art experience fostered by the Visual Arts Center.
