Background: In “Not Just a Game” Zirin argues that rather than offering escapist entertainment, American sports historically have been at the center of some of the most fiery political debates and struggles. In a fascinating tour of the good, bad and ugly of American sports culture, Zirin looks at how sports have glamorized militarism, racism, sexism and homophobia and at the rebel athletes who bucked the system and stood up for social justice.
Zirin is the best-selling author of five books, including “Welcome to the Terrordome: The Pain, Politics and Promise of Sports,” “Muhammad Ali Handbook” and “What’s My Name, Fool? Sports and Resistance in the United States.” He is sports editor of The Nation magazine, host of Sirius XM satellite’s weekly show “Edge of Sports Radio” and has appeared on sports television programs such as “Outside the Lines.”
The event is hosted by the H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports, an internationally recognized research center in the College of Education‘s Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.
The film is free and open to the public, with seating limited to 300.
