Innovative Teacher Preparation Program to be Discussed

Event: “Forging a National Grow-Your-Own Latino/a Teacher Preparation Pipeline: How Strengthening the Teaching Professional Can Improve Student Learning” will be a discussion about building community-based, university-connected teacher education pipelines.

Event: “Forging a National Grow-Your-Own Latino/a Teacher Preparation Pipeline: How Strengthening the Teaching Professional Can Improve Student Learning” will be a discussion about building community-based, university-connected teacher education pipelines.

When: Tuesday, Oct. 25, 5:30-7 p.m.

Where: George I. Sánchez Building, Cissy Parker McDaniel Deans’ Conference Room (SZB 238), The University of Texas at Austin campus. 

Background: Dr. Angela Valenzuela, associate vice president for diversity and community engagement and director of the Texas Center for Education Policy (TCEP), and Patricia D. Lopez, TCEP research associate, will present research from their work as directors of the National Latino/a Education Research Agenda Project (NLERAP). John C. Guerra, CEO of Aztec Worldwide Inc. and NLERAP Council board member, will moderate.

Research indicates teachers are the single most determining school-based factors that facilitate students’ higher-order learning, creativity, literacy and social skills in ways that positively predict student achievement, graduation rates and college eligibility among Latino youths. Valenzuela and Lopez will present findings from their NLERAP research that was conducted in Texas, Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Illinois and New York.
