Event: More than 150 volunteers including students and faculty members from the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin will take to Austin’s streets and homeless shelters to survey and identify Austin’s most vulnerable homeless individuals and families. The efforts are part of a national program to house 100,000 homeless individuals and families by 2013.
When: The registry will be conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday from 5-6:15 a.m., students will survey homeless people at the “Feed My People Breakfast” at the First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca St.
Background: Social Work students have worked with Austin End Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) and the 100 Homes Campaign to organize and implement the Austin Registry Week survey. Homeless advocates hope to use the campaign as a framework for determining the most acute need for housing, as well as collect data for understanding the specific housing needs of Austin’s homeless.
