Event: Ronald Crutcher, president of Wheaton College, renowned cellist and former director of the School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, will present “Higher Education for Democracy: Developing Capacities for Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement on Campus,” as part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement Fall Lecture Series.

Background: A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Miami University, Ronald A. Crutcher pursued graduate studies at Yale University as a Woodrow Wilson and Ford Foundation Fellow. In 1979, he was the first cellist to receive the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale. Crutcher came to Wheaton College in Massachusetts from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and professor of music. From 1994 to 1999, he served as director of the School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he was vice president of academic affairs at the Cleveland Institute of Music (1990-94) and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1987-90).
