Gage E. Paine is returning to her alma mater, The University of Texas at Austin, to serve as Vice President for Student Affairs. For the past five years, Paine has served in that post at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
Paine is scheduled to assume the new job Aug. 1.
In her new post, Paine will oversee the Office of the Dean of Students, the Counseling and Mental Health Center, the Division of Housing and Food Service, the Division of Recreational Sports, Texas Student Media, the Texas Union, University Health Services, the Student Activity Center, Texas Parents and the Office of Assessment.
“Over the last five years, I have been privileged to work with many talented and creative people at UTSA,” said Paine. “Together, we have accomplished great things that have positively impacted UTSA students. While it’s difficult to say goodbye, UT Austin has always remained close to my heart. I am looking forward to returning to The University of Texas to serve a new community of students.”
At UTSA, Paine oversaw 18 university departments, managed a division budget of $50 million and oversaw the university’s intercollegiate athletics program. She worked with Provost John Frederick to establish Leadership UTSA, a yearlong, intensive program designed to help faculty and staff members develop leadership skills and an institutional perspective, better preparing them to pursue career leadership roles in academia. UTSA’s program is modeled after a similar program offered by the University of Texas System.
Before joining UTSA, Paine held similar student affairs leadership posts at four other Texas universities. She served as vice president for student affairs at Trinity University, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of student life at Southern Methodist University, associate dean of students at The University of Texas at Austin and associate dean of students at McMurry University in Abilene
Paine was chosen from a field of 77 applicants and is filling a position vacated by Juan C. González, who is returning to teaching in the College of Education this year after serving seven years as vice president for student affairs.
Paine earned her Ph.D. in educational administration from the university in 1996. She also earned a J.D. from Texas Tech University in 1982, and a bachelor of arts in letters from the University of Oklahoma in 1979.
“Gage Paine is a highly respected member of the UTSA executive team who, in just five years, has made a significant and lasting impact on our students, faculty and staff,” said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. “Her leadership was critical in the launch of Roadrunner Football, and she brought a series of powerful leadership programs to UTSA that have encouraged students, faculty and staff to nurture their own leadership skills. While we will miss her at UTSA, we congratulate her on this new chapter in her career.”
