Lawrence G. Miller, a long-time educator with extensive experience in community college administration, has been named director of The University of Texas at Austin’s National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD), effective Sept. 1.
NISOD is an outreach arm of the College of Education’s Higher Education Administration Program and Community College Leadership Program (CCLP).
“We are so pleased to have Larry Miller accept this position,” said Manuel J. Justiz, dean of the College of Education. “He brings a wealth of experience as an able administrator, a teacher and as a real thought leader in the community college arena. We look forward to working with Larry as he takes NISOD ahead.”
He has served as chief academic officer for Snead State Community College in Alabama, vice president for institutional advancement at Chattanooga State Community College, director of continuing education for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, and president of American InterContinental University’s Washington, D.C., campus. Miller began his career in education at Austin Community College, where he headed the district’s television production area for four years. Each of these academic assignments allowed Miller was able to employ his considerable expertise in fundraising, media and online learning.
Miller holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from The University of Texas at Austin. While a doctoral student, he was a Kellogg Fellow and worked for NISOD, providing conference support and assistance in membership relations.
“I’m very gratified to have this opportunity to build upon the legacy of NISOD and move the organization forward in some very exciting times,” stated Miller. “I look forward to reaching out to NISOD’s organizational and corporate partners as well as our 700 institutional members. I plan to carefully consider their thoughts on how we may enhance the impact we have on the world of higher education, especially with our core community and technical colleges.”
Since its creation in 1978 NISOD has offered professional development to community college faculty members, administrators and staffers, and it has been committed to the continued improvement of teaching and learning, with the ultimate goal of student success.
“For almost a quarter of a century doctoral students in the Department of Educational Administration have been able to supplement their education with information and strategies presented at annual conferences hosted by NISOD, the most senior of three outreach programs hosted by our department,” said Norma Cantu, chairperson of the Department of Educational Administration.
More than 700 community colleges nationwide are NISOD members.
