Bill Powers, president of The University of Texas at Austin, has been named recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Citizen Award by the Capitol Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Powers will be honored at the council’s Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner and Gala at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Frank Erwin Center in Austin. The award recognizes Powers for having taken on leadership roles in education and civic service that resulted in expanding opportunity and understanding.
The Capitol Area Council’s Distinguished Citizen Award is presented annually to individuals who share scouting’s belief in leadership, determination and values, and have contributed significantly to the growth and vitality of Central Texas. Funds from the award dinner and gala benefit more than 600 scouting programs across 15 Central Texas counties serving youths regardless of race, faith, ability or socioeconomics.
The university’s athletic director, DeLoss Dodds, is chairman of the event, businessman/philanthropist Red McCombs is honorary chairman and Texas Exes and active university supporters Del Williams and Gary Farmer are executive vice chairmen.
