The first-ever invitational Summit on Educational Data Visualization is bringing together national education scholars, business leaders and technology experts for a discussion on the essential role big data plays in solving some of education’s biggest challenges.

Event: Summit on Educational Data Visualization

When: May 6-7, 2014

Where: ATandT Executive Education and Conference Center,1900 University Ave., Austin, Texas 78705.

Background: The College of Education’s Institute for Public School Initiatives (IPSI) will host the first-ever education-focused national summit on big data, bringing together national business, technology and education experts to examine how data can better support education, research and policymaking.

During the past two decades, learning that takes place or is tracked in a computer-mediated environment has grown exponentially. As a result, educators and scholars have a tremendous amount of data that has the potential to significantly improve teaching and learning. Data visualization a longtime staple in engineering and the physical sciences offers a range of powerful tools that can enhance research and make communication of education reform proposals to the public much easier.

The summit aims to identify current uses of big data in education, highlight emerging trends, share perspectives on how visualization techniques are affecting education, and develop recommendations for future use of data visualization in the field.

Summit sponsors include Pearson, the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), Tableau Software, SAS, and The ACT.
