MEDIA ADVISORY: UT Austin to Relocate Jefferson Davis and Woodrow Wilson Statues from Main Mall

University contractors will move the Jefferson Davis and Woodrow Wilson statues from the main mall for refurbishing and eventual placement.

EVENT: University contractors will move the Jefferson Davis and Woodrow Wilson statues for refurbishing and eventual placement.

WHEN: Sunday, Aug. 30. Moving preparation and wrapping of statues will begin at 9 a.m. Statue lift and removal expected to occur around 10 a.m. 

WHERE: Media interested in photographs and visual opportunities are asked to meet university representatives on Inner Campus Drive near the Main Mall steps. There will not be any opportunity for on-camera interviews.

Parking will be available on 21st Street or Speedway.

BACKGROUND: Following President Gregory L. Fenves’ decision to relocate the Jefferson Davis statue to the Briscoe Center for American History, the university’s Project Management and Construction Services team engaged Vault Fine Art Services to handle the removal of both the Davis and Woodrow Wilson statues.

Once removed, the Davis statue will be refurbished so it is ready for interior, educational display. The Briscoe Center will undergo a renovation and plans to exhibit the statue within the next 18 months.
