Powers, who passed away in March, was president from 2006 to 2015, and he was a member of the School of Law faculty for over 40 years, including six as dean. As president, he established two of the university’s 18 colleges, overhauled the undergraduate curriculum and led efforts to recognize and promote the educational benefits of diversity, taking UT to the Supreme Court and ultimately winning a favorable ruling in the Fisher case in 2016.
The UT System Board of Regents unanimously voted to rename the Student Activity Center in honor of Powers on Aug. 15.
