A Head Coach, Presidential Libraries and Important Collections

In our new series SEC Connections, we take a quick look at coincidences, partnerships and parallels between The University of Texas at Austin and our sister schools in the Southeastern Conference. This week, Mississippi State.

Darrell K Royal was head coach at both universities. Royal coached the Bulldogs’ offensive backs in 1952, then returned as head coach in 1953 and 1954. After a season at Washington, Royal began his legendary 19-year-run as head coach and athletics director at Texas in 1957.

Texas and Mississippi State are both home to Presidential Libraries: The Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum was opened on the UT campus in 1971, and Mississippi State, since 2012, has been home to the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library.

Mississippi State holds alumnus John Grisham’s papers, and Texas holds the Watergate archives of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
