Employee Criminal Conduct

In January 2018, many UT community members expressed concerns about university policies and procedures in place at that time regarding criminal conduct. Under those rules, when UT employees engaged in criminal behavior off campus, the university sought to determine their impact on campus safety and security or other campus operations when assessing if any discipline was warranted.

At the end of January, President Gregory L. Fenves charged a committee with evaluating these practices and their enforcement, with a particular focus on how the university responds to criminal violations, or allegations of criminal violations, by employees off campus. The committee submitted recommendations to the president on March 30, which the president accepted.

The most significant recommendation is that the university will now consider UT’s Mission, Core Values and Code of Conduct when reviewing criminal violations by employees and developing the university’s response, in addition  to determining their impact on campus safety and security or other campus operations.
