AUSTIN, Texas — U.S. News & World Report ranked The University of Texas at Austin No. 34 in the world in its ranking of Best Global Universities, making it the only Texas university ranked in the top 100.

The rankings are based on 13 indicators that quantify research performance, global and regional reputations and international collaboration. U.S. News also uses these factors for its global subject rankings. UT Austin earned top-50 rankings in 12 subjects:

  • Computer Science — No. 5
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering — No. 8
  • Materials Science — No. 17
  • Mathematics — No. 20
  • Arts and Humanities — No. 20
  • Geosciences — No. 22
  • Chemistry — No. 25
  • Physics — No. 30
  • Space Science — No. 34
  • Engineering — No. 37
  • Social Sciences and Public Health — No. 44
  • Psychiatry/Psychology — No. 48

The ranking encompasses the top 1,500 institutions from 81 countries. Other Texas universities were included in the data set — Rice University ranked No. 108 and Texas A&M University ranked No. 134 globally.

The global rankings primarily emphasize schools’ academic research and overall research reputations. Factors such as the number of faculty publications, citations, books and conferences are considered. U.S. News created the global rankings in response to a growing number of students considering universities outside of their own country.

UT Austin has ranked highly in other global contests, including No. 31 in the world by the Center for World University Rankings in 2019. In September, U.S. News & World Report ranked UT Austin No. 48 among all private and public universities and No. 14 among public universities nationally.
