AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas System Board of Regents named seven University of Texas at Austin faculty members as recipients of the 2017 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (ROTA). The awards are the Board of Regents’ highest honor and recognize faculty members who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction.

The 2017 UT Austin ROTA recipients are:

Recipients of the award each receive a cash award of $25,000.

This year, 56 faculty members from across the UT System’s 14 academic and health institutions were honored by the regents.

“The Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards is one of the nation’s largest awards programs to honor exceptional instruction in the university classroom. It is a reflection of the value the University of Texas System and the Board of Regents place on extraordinary teaching and student success, and it represents our profound appreciation to these wonderful educators and the life-changing impact they have on students at UT institutions,” said Board of Regents Chairman Paul Foster.

Faculty members undergo a series of rigorous evaluations by students, peer faculty members and external reviewers. The review panels consider a range of activities and criteria in their evaluations of a candidate’s teaching performance including classroom expertise, curricula quality, innovative course development and student learning outcomes.

“At UT Austin, excellence centers around our faculty. I am extremely proud of our ROTA winners and their dedication to teaching and helping our students succeed,” said Maurie McInnis, executive vice president and provost at UT Austin. “It is teachers like them that inspire our students to reach their goals and change the world.”

Since establishing the awards in 2008, the regents have granted nearly $18 million to more than 700 faculty members across the UT System.
