Parents and teachers interested in special education issues are invited to the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) Scholarship in Action lecture on Thursday, Oct. 21 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Community Engagement Center in east Austin.
Dr. Audrey Sorrells, associate professor of special education in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin, and Heather Cole, Ph.D. candidate in special education, will present “Getting the Right Services for Your Child: Engaging Schools to Address Disproportionality in Special Education.” The free program is open to the public and targeted to parents of school age children, or anyone interested in special education.
The aim of the program is to inform the community about research on issues families and individuals are facing.
“It’s an area of interest in schools for African American families,” said College of Education Professor and DDCE Faculty Fellow Louis Harrison Jr. “There’s an over-population of these kids placed in special education.”
Sorrells is co-author of “Critical Issues in Special Education: Access, Diversity and Accountability” and a forthcoming book, “Assessment and Intervention Trends and Issues in Special Education.” Cole holds a law degree and has worked as an educational advocate for people with disabilities and in various public service roles for more than a decade.
The Community Engagement Center is at 1009 E. 11th St. in the Marvin C. Griffin Building.
