Former presidential candidate and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, will keynote the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation’s New Politics Forum Election Debrief Conference, on Nov. 12 at the Texas State Capitol.
The New Politics Forum will feature scholars, students and political strategists, including Perry for Governor campaign manager Rob Johnson, Bill White for Governor campaign manager Michael Moore and Republican Party of Texas chairman Stephen Munisteri, discussing the results of the Texas gubernatorial elections and previewing the upcoming state legislative session.
An initiative of the Annette Strauss Institute, the New Politics Forum is a semi-annual event that shares political knowledge with students on a non-partisan basis by bringing them into contact with experienced political professionals, members of the press and researchers.
“In order to attract talented and vivacious individuals into the political process, we must provide young people with a practical, non-partisan and well-rounded education — grounded in ethics — that teaches them the rules of the profession and helps make those connections that can lead them to their first job,” says Roderick P. Hart, director of the Annette Strauss Institute and dean of the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin.
Speakers will address “Red States/Blue States,” an election results overview; a tell-all from the Texas campaign trail; and “Hot Topics 2011,” a look ahead to the 82nd Texas legislature. Dean’s speech will be “A Look Toward the 2012 Elections.”
Speakers include Matt Angle, founder of the LoneStar Project; Mike Baselice, Baselice and Associates; Steve Bickerstaff, the university’ School of Law; Michael Brandl, McCombs School of Business; Dana Chiodo, TexasCandidates.com; Sherri Greenberg, interim director for the Center for Politics and Governance at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs; Lloyd Potter, state of Texas demographer; Wayne Slater, Dallas Morning News; and Chris Perkins, Wilson Research Strategies.
The New Politics Forum takes place from 1-9 p.m., Nov. 12 at the Texas Capitol. A schedule is available online. An Annette Strauss Institute 10-year anniversary after-party will follow at the Snack Bar on S. Congress Avenue. Registration for the New Politics Forum, which includes dinner, is $25 for students and $35 for the public. Student scholarships are available.
