The University of Texas at Austin opens its doors on Saturday, March 5 and welcomes the state of Texas to a day of exploration, fun and learning with faculty, staff and students at one of the leading research universities in the nation.
Explore UT seeks to broaden horizons and motivate the children of Texas to aspire to higher education.
The university will host its 12th annual “Explore UT, The Biggest Open House in Texas!” from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Activities are free and no registration is required. Explore UT will happen rain or shine. A schedule of events can be found online.
More than 50,000 visitors are expected to arrive on campus for a day of free, fun and interesting lectures, performances, activities and demonstrations. Explore UT invites Texans of all ages to experience the intellectual life, technological advances and rich natural and cultural resources of a world-class university. At Explore UT, guests have the opportunity to explore every corner of the university’s campus. With more than 400 programs offered for visitors of all ages, there is something of interest for everyone.
This year’s lineup includes:
- Unseen Energy: Explore a student-made windmill, an electricity-generating bike and more with Engineers for a Sustainable World, a student engineering organization.
- Potpourri of 3-D Earth Visualizations: Virtually experience geoscience as no human can. Travel into solid earth, fly high above the Earth without a plane and peek into microscopic spaces. 3-D goggles provide an eye-popping view of real data.
- Origins of the Vampire: The word “vampire” appeared in Russia more than 800 years ago. A multimedia presentation and lecture will show the vampire in its Slavic and Western contexts.
- Art Talks for the Next Generation: Real, imaginary, implied and hidden eyes and seeing have been a constant theme in works of art. The director of the Blanton Museum of Art presents insights and explanations.
- Hourly tours at the Harry Ransom Center exhibition, “Becoming Tennessee Williams.” The Center’s Gutenberg Bible and the world’s first photograph are on display.
- Dances and Jokes with the Skyros Quartet: master’s students in chamber music performance take a journey through centuries of musical history.
