Event: The Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights April speaker series will feature a panel of six University of Texas at Austin faculty members for a discussion titled “Shades of Diversity: Bringing the Civil Rights Movement Forward-Feminism in Today’s World.”

Background: University of Texas at Austin faculty will discuss the role of feminist analysis in contemporary civil rights issues as it pertains to areas such as the arts, business, education and religion/spirituality.
Panelists include:

- Dr. Eric L. McDaniel, associate professor, Department of Government
- Dr. Lisa L. Moore, associate professor of English, Center for Women’s and Gender Studies
- Dr. Eric Tang, assistant professor, Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, and core faculty, Center for Asian American Studies
- Dr. Shirley Thompson, associate professor, Department of American Studies and Department of African and African Diaspora Studies

About the Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights: The Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights is an annual event organized by students, faculty and staff. The symposium is named after Heman Marion Sweatt, the first African American admitted into the university’s School of Law after the Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case of Sweatt v. Painter in 1950. This event is the last in a series of four being held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sweatt Symposium. This year’s symposium will culminate on May 6 with “A Special Evening of Honors” to recognize individuals from the university and Austin community who embody the life and legacy of Sweatt.
