Meet a Forty Acres Scholar: Connor Healy

Ten new Longhorns will start the fall semester as Forty Acres Scholars. In this student profile, get to know Connor Healy from Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas.

Connor Healy is one of 10 top entering freshmen from across the state selected to receive the prestigious Forty Acres Scholarship, a new program from the Texas Exes Scholarship Foundation.

Connor graduated from the Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas, at the end of May as class valedictorian. He will enter The University of Texas at Austin in the fall. He is a National Merit Scholar Finalist and an AP Scholar with Honors.

In high school, Connor was very involved in theater productions, playing various characters in musicals and plays. He served as captain of the speech and debate team, chairman of the Community Service Leadership Board, helped found the Quiz Bowl team, was Head Cappie for the Cappies and was a member of the varsity cross country team and the squash and tennis teams. Cappies is a program in which students attend theater productions at surrounding schools to write reviews for local newspapers.

For the past three years, Connor has volunteered at Rays of Light, working with special needs children and their siblings to allow their parents a night out. He has also spent time tutoring underprivileged children at a local elementary school through the Senior Service Project in the subject of math for his Senior Service Project, and he has sought out peer tutoring opportunities.

Connor is a member of numerous clubs and organizations at school including Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Math Club, Community Service Leadership Board and Environmental Club, among others.

About the Forty Acres Scholars Program

This will be the first year for the Forty Acres Scholars Program, which will be the largest four-year merit-based scholarship program and the first of its kind at The University of Texas at Austin. Forty Acres Scholars will receive a comprehensive financial package, covering tuition, fees, books and living expenses. The package also includes priority housing in honors residence halls and funding for summer programs such as study abroad, service learning and internships.

Nearly 800 applications were received this fall for 10 available scholarships. The students who were selected have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and leadership ability. The Forty Acres Scholars will have unique opportunities to build upon those skills throughout their time at the university.
