New and returning students moving into residence halls at The University of Texas at Austin for the fall semester will be welcomed and assisted by volunteer members of the university community during Mooov-In 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, and Saturday, Aug. 20.
William Powers Jr., president of The University of Texas at Austin, will be among those greeting arriving students and their parents during Mooov-In. He will be at Duren Hall at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19.
Mooov-In embodies a tradition of students, faculty and staff members volunteering to help new and returning students moving into their residence halls the weekend before the start of fall semester classes, which this year begins Wednesday, Aug. 24.
“The Mooov-In tradition is a fantastic way to give all of our residents a big, friendly welcome for the year,” said accounting junior John Ramsey, president of the University Residence Hall Association, a student organization that advocates for those who live on campus.
Ramsey said about 300 members of the university community have volunteered to help with the project, which involves working in shifts helping new students and their parents carry suitcases, boxes and other belongings from vehicles and moving the items into residence halls. About 7,400 residents will live in campus housing during the fall semester. About 70 percent of the beds will be for freshman students.
Mooov-In, which began in 1993, is sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Division of Housing and Food Service and the University Residence Hall Association.
