The President’s Sustainability Steering Committee at The University of Texas at Austin will host the 2nd Annual UT Campus Sustainability Symposium on Friday, Sept. 23 in the Legislative Assembly Room of the Student Activity Center (SAC).

The symposium, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., will showcase many of the most promising sustainability-related research projects and operations initiatives at the university, led by faculty, staff and students.

President William Powers Jr. will provide opening remarks and the President’s Sustainability Steering Committee will present its annual report [PDF] on sustainability achievements on campus.  Much like last year’s event, the Sustainability Symposium will feature over 20 quick presentations in Pecha-Kucha style seven-minute blocks. Following each grouping of presentations, audience members will have the opportunity to interact and ask questions.

In conjunction with the symposium, the Campus Environmental Center will host the Amazing Sustainability Race on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 68 p.m. Student teams will compete to identify important sustainability landmarks on campus, such as the SAC, which is striving for a LEED gold certification, and the new solar panel installation on one of the university’s  parking garages. An ice cream social will follow the race. The winning team will receive a prize, and students will have the opportunity to learn more about student-run sustainability activities on campus.  Students will meet on the south side of the Tower (main mall side).  For more information about participating in the race, e-mail info@utenvironment.org.

The Sustainability Symposium is open to the public and sponsored by the President’s Sustainability Steering Committee with support from the university’s Office of Sustainability, the Center for Sustainable Development, the Campus Environmental Center, the Environmental Science Institute and the Energy Institute.
