Event: To commemorate Black History Month, the Butler School of Music, in partnership with Huston-Tillotson University, will present a free concert celebrating black composers of the past and present.
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3
Where: Bates Recital Hall, MRH Building.
Background: This is the sixth collaborative black composers concert performed by students from the Butler School of Music and Huston-Tillotson University.
Performers will include the Huston-Tillotson Jazz Combo, the University of Texas Concert Chorale and the Huston-Tillotson Concert Choir. The Prairie View AandM University Concert Choir will be a new addition to the lineup.
This year’s concert will feature music by composer and arranger Roland Martin Carver. Carver will serve as guest conductor for part of the program. He is famous for his arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is commonly referred to as the black national anthem. Carver’s arrangement is the most widely performed version of the song and will be the highlight of the evening.
