Background: “Serving Texas Through Health Disparities Research” is an annual research conference presented by the St. David’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research in Underserved Populations at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. Co-sponsors of the event are the Jack and Laura Lee Blanton Lectureship in Nursing, the Center for Social Work Research, The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, the George and Diana Sharpe Perinatal Lectureship in Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau International-Epsilon Theta Chapter.
The conference will feature presentations by individuals renowned for their work in public health, health disparities and research-based interventions. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. His presentation is titled “Health Priorities for Texas.”
Additional speakers include Kathleen Gaffney, professor at the School of Nursing, George Mason University; Mary Steinhardt, professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin; Dr. Roberto Rodriguez, senior program officer at the St. David’s Foundation; Dr. M. Christopher Gibbons, associate director of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute; and Sharon Horner, associate dean for research at The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing.
About Lakey: As commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, Lakey oversees disease prevention, emergency preparedness, community health services, consumer safety, mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment and was elected president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials for 2011-2012. He has served as professor of medicine and director of the Center for Pulmonary and Infectious Disease Control at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. Lakey trained at Vanderbilt University in internal medicine, pediatrics and pediatric infectious disease.
