The Project: UT’s Largest Day of Service

On Saturday, Feb. 23, a few thousand Longhorns put down their books and offered a helping hand during The Project: the University’s largest day of service. Here’s a look at some of the volunteers on hand to help an underserved Austin neighborhood. The Project is brought to you by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement‘s Volunteer and Service Learning Center.

Mulch ado about nothing? UT Austin students tackle a giant mound of mulch at the Dove Springs Recreation Center.

Mendez Middle School will be a more beautiful place when UT Austin students finish prepping and planting flower beds.

UT Pharmacy students provided health screening to Dove Springs area residents that included testing blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Painting picnic tables was one of many jobs students completed at First Independent Baptist Church which serves as a hub for several Dove Springs community youth groups.

Longhorn football great Vince Young rallied the troops at The Project at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning and stayed to pose for pictures, including this one with Yvonne Fuentes Loya, director of the Longhorn Center for Civic Engagement and Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement.
