Media executives, journalists and scholars from the U.S. and around the world will attend the 14th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), an annual global conference at The University of Texas at Austin’s Blanton Museum of Art on April 19-20. Registration is open online, but seats are limited and likely to fill up. A full schedule is available here.
The cost to attend the symposium is $80 for the public and $30 for students and faculty members. Sponsors include the Knight Foundation, Omidyar Network, Scripps Howard Foundation, The Dallas Morning News and the Ford Foundation. Univision News will offer simultaneous translation to Spanish.
ISOJ offers a unique blend of academic research along with perspectives from online journalism industry leaders.
“We did it again,” says professor Rosental Alves, founder and director of ISOJ. “We have a great program with high-caliber speakers from both the news industry and academia. As in previous years, ISOJ participants who come to Austin or follow us via live video-streaming or social media reports will learn a lot about some of the most important challenges the digital revolution imposes on journalism nowadays.”
The opening keynote speaker will be Clark Gilbert, president and chief executive officer of Deseret News Publishing Company. Gilbert is a former professor at Harvard Business School.
Other keynote speakers include Andy Carvin, senior strategist on the social media desk at NPR; Jill Abramson, executive editor at The New York Times; and Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.
The symposium has two main components: discussions with journalism industry leaders and research presentations by esteemed journalism and new media academics from around the world. The articles also will be printed in the #ISOJ Journal, which will be available during the conference.
ISOJ will feature these four industry-related panels:
- “Disruption and Innovation: News Organizations’ Strategies for the New Media Ecosystem,” led by Neil Chase, a digital media consultant who formerly worked at The New York Times
- “Responsive Design and Other Trends in Digital Platforms’ Architecture and Design,” led by Roger Black, a principal at New York-based Roger Black Studio Inc.
- “Going Mobile: Challenges and Opportunities for Journalists and News Organizations in the Mobile Revolution,” led by Mindy McAdams, professor and Knight Chair at the University of Florida
- “Data Visualization: Creating a New Language to Communicate Big Data,” led by Alberto Cairo, a lecturer at the University of Miami
