The University of Texas at Austin will honor 205 members of the university community students, faculty members, staffers and retirees who died during the past year.

UT Remembers begins at 8:45 a.m. Friday with a formal ceremony to lower the flags on the Main Mall to half-staff. The ceremony will be conducted by members of the university’s ROTC color guard.

An informal discussion on the topic of grief will be held at 10 a.m. in the Jamail Academic Room (Main Building, Room 212).

The UT Remembers service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Tower Garden, north of the Tower and Main Building. The name of each person being remembered will be read aloud and a Tower bell will toll in tribute.

At dusk, the UT Tower will remain dark with the exception of two rings of white light, one at the very top of the Tower, the other around the observation deck. No other areas of the Tower will be illuminated.

At 8:30 p.m., members of the Student Guild of University Carillonneurs will perform a special concert on the Tower carillon in honor of those being remembered.

UT Remembers brings together families, friends, colleagues and co-workers to remember those who died and to reflect upon who they were, what they gave to the institution and what they meant to the people whose lives they touched.

For more information on UT Remembers or to view a list of those being remembered, visit the program website.

Parking will be provided at no charge to participants in the San Antonio Parking Garage at 2420 San Antonio St. Shuttle service will be provided from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. between the garage and UT Remembers activities.

UT Remembers is a program of UT Cares, a campus-wide committee formed in 1996 to provide support to the university community in times of trauma or loss. The first UT Remembers was held in 1998.

Note to Editors/Producers: Parking for satellite and microwave trucks providing live coverage of the UT Remembers flag-lowering ceremony Friday morning will be provided on Inner Campus Drive in spaces just east of the statues near the Main Plaza. Traffic cones will mark the spaces. Other news vehicles may secure parking from the guard booth at 24th and Whitis streets. News media covering the 2 p.m. UT Remembers ceremony in the Tower Garden can secure parking from the guard booth as well.
