University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers will speak at a meeting of the San Angelo chapter of the Texas Exes, the university’s alumni association.
Powers will address a variety of topics in higher education including the importance to society of research universities.
When: Thursday, June 13, 6-9 p.m. Powers is scheduled to speak about 8 p.m.

Background: Bill Powers is the 28th president of The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to becoming president, he served as the dean of the university’s School of Law. As president, Powers has focused on building support for higher education throughout Texas, elevating the university’s academic standing to the best in the nation among public universities, recruiting a diverse student body and faculty, and reforming the undergraduate core curriculum.
A Los Angeles native, Powers received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1967 and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1977. He joined The University of Texas at Austin faculty in 1977.
The San Angelo Texas Exes chapter will recognize area high school students who have won scholarships to attend The University of Texas at Austin and to raise money for future scholarships.
