Background:
The University of Texas Elementary School will kick off its 10th Anniversary year with a celebration that will commemorate a decade of the demonstration school’s success serving urban children in the heart of East Austin.
UTES Executive Director Melissa Chavez, Management Board chair Ed Sharpe and UT Vice President for Diversity
and Community Engagement Gregory J. Vincent will discuss the elementary school’s role in the pre-K to Ph.D. education pipeline. The event is free and open to the public.
UT Elementary alumni winners of the “How UT Elementary Changed My Life” essay contest will be announced, and winning essays will be read at the event.
Bill Powers, president of The University of Texas at Austin, has committed $2 million to the next phase of the UT Elementary School capital campaign, which will fund a new building to house classrooms. The public charter school was founded in 2003 as part of the UT System’s “Every Child, Every Advantage” initiative and accepts students who live in a five-zip-code area of East Austin from pre-K through fifth grade.
