Tribal Elders to Bless New American Indians in Texas Learning Gallery at UT Austin

American Indian elders will bless the new American Indians in Texas Learning Gallery at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 during a ceremony that will include traditional garb, drum music and a procession of flags from the different nations represented.

American Indian elders will bless the new American Indians in Texas Learning Gallery at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 during a ceremony that will include traditional garb, drum music and a procession of flags from the different nations represented.

The event is hosted by Housing and Food Service, part of the Division of Student Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.

WHAT: The special blessing ceremony will feature elders from multiple tribes. It will be followed by a cultural dinner. Native American groups in traditional garb will perform a series of traditional dances, including the Men’s Traditional and Fancy Dance, Women’s Buckskin and a Tiny Tots Dance. Housing and Food Service Chef Robert Mayberry has created a menu that includes bison sliders with chayote slaw, pemmican bites and sumac tea with honey.

The American Indians in Texas Learning Gallery is the latest edition to the university’s residence hall museums, a series of galleries integrated directly into living spaces to stimulate learning and cross-cultural understanding beyond the classroom.

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 30. Blessing at 3:30 p.m. Cultural event 4:30-7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Jester West Residence Hall, 2nd Floor (201 E. 21st St.). The cultural dinner is at the nearby Jester Spanish Oaks Terrace.
