MEDIA ADVISORY: UT Austin’s Harry Ransom Center to Celebrate Harry Houdini

The Harry Ransom Center commemorates Harry Houdini on the 90th anniversary of his death with a range of events.

EVENT: The Ransom Center commemorates Harry Houdini on the 90th anniversary of his death with a range of events that provide insight into Houdini’s life and work. The Ransom Center, located on The University of Texas at Austin campus, holds a collection of Harry Houdini materials.

WHO MAY ATTEND: Ransom Center events are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, and a line will form upon arrival of the first patron. Payment and registration required for Central Market cooking class online or by phone at 512-206-1014. Tickets required for The Hidden Room performances at York Rite Masonic Hall, which can be purchased online.



BACKGROUND: The Ransom Center’s Houdini materials include descriptions of magic tricks, correspondence, never-before published photographs and prints, scrapbooks, manuscripts, financial/business records and historical posters and advertisements. To celebrate Houdini, the Ransom Center will screen “The Grim Game,” a 1919 silent film that stars Houdini; host a cooking class inspired by Houdini and his Hungarian heritage led by culinary instructor Louis Ortiz in the Central Market Cooking School; and present The Hidden Room’s performance “Houdini Speaks to the Living,” an original production inspired by more than a year’s research in the Ransom Center’s Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle collections. A display of Houdini materials, including one of Houdini’s ball weights with ankle cuff and chain, will be on view in the Ransom Center’s lobby.

Oct. 4: Film screening of “The Grim Game” (1919) at Ransom Center, 7 p.m. 



Oct. 16: “Dining with Harry Houdini” cooking class at Central Market Cooking School, 11 a.m. 



Oct. 21-23, 26-30: Performance of “Houdini Speaks to the Living” at York Rite Masonic Hall, 8 p.m. 



Oct. 31: Free performance of “Houdini Speaks to the Living” at Ransom Center, 7 p.m.
