MEDIA ADVISORY: Texas Politics Speaker Series Presents a Live-Streamed Conversation with House Speaker Joe Straus

Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Joe Straus will address policy issues facing the 85th Texas Legislature in a live-streamed interview with the Texas Politics Project.

What: Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Joe Straus will address policy issues facing the 85th Texas Legislature including the state’s budget, public education and the implications of the 2016 election for Texas, in a live-streamed interview conducted by James Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at The University of Texas at Austin.

When: Noon, Friday, March 24.

Where: Mezes Hall, studio 6, 158 W. 21st St., Austin, Texas 78712

Who May Attend: Seating is limited and reserved for students and faculty members. The live-streamed interview will be available for public access at www.texaspolitics.utexas.edu/events/livestream.

Web viewers can submit questions via Twitter during the event using the Twitter handle @TxPolProject. Questions will be addressed during the concluding question and answer session.

Media: Media representatives are invited to monitor the interview from the green room adjacent to the studio.

Background: Elected speaker of the Texas House in January 2009, Straus is at the center of the legislative processes, affecting UT Austin students, faculty members and staffers, as well as millions of other Texans.

“We’re happy to have the opportunity to talk with Speaker Straus as the state’s leadership continues to debate the state’s priorities during the legislative session,” Henson said. “The outcome of debates currently taking place in the Texas Legislature over budget priorities has implications for everyone who lives in the state, and Speaker Straus is one of the major voices in those debates.”

The Texas Politics Project is affiliated with the Department of Government in the College of Liberal Arts at UT Austin. The Texas Politics Project Speaker Series, established in 2004, is designed to aid Texans in becoming more thoughtful and effective participants in their government.
