AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin ranked No. 13 among all U.S. universities for publication of scientific research, according to the latest report from the Nature Index.

UT Austin was No. 5 among U.S. public universities.

The Nature Index also evaluates productivity of the top institutions in four specialty subject areas. UT Austin had top 25 rankings in three areas:

  • No. 6 in earth and environmental sciences
  • No. 6 in chemistry
  • No. 14 in physical sciences

The Nature Index tabulates author affiliations for about 60,000 scientific articles published each year in elite natural science journals. The list of journals includes prestigious publications in chemistry, life sciences, physical sciences and earth and environmental sciences, including Science and Nature. Editors counted the number of times each institution’s authors appeared in the journals, adjusting for co-authorship.

Other Texas schools listed in the top 50 academic institutions include Texas A&M University (No. 30), The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (No. 33) and Rice University (No. 44).

The Nature Index is just the latest research-oriented ranking to recognize UT Austin. According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 edition of “Best Graduate Schools,” UT Austin has five programs ranked No. 1 and 49 schools and specialties ranked among the nation’s top 10. Only two other public universities in the country have as many top 10 graduate programs.

In recent international rankings, UT Austin ranked No. 31 among universities in the world in the latest Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) and No. 36 in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings.
