An innovative new program brings together two of the top disciplines at The University of Texas at Austin to help engineers become business leaders.
The new five-year program, a collaboration between the Cockrell School of Engineering and the McCombs School of Business, blends technical innovation and strategic business thinking. Students will earn both a Bachelor of Science in engineering and a Master of Science in business.
Initially, engineering degrees will be in petroleum and geosystems engineering or mechanical engineering. And the business side offers four specialized tracks: business analytics, finance, marketing, and information technology and management.
“Many of the world’s most successful CEOs began their careers as engineers but often had to return to school or learn business on the job. Our new program changes that paradigm,” said Roger Bonnecaze, dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering. “From the beginning, students will develop both technical mastery and business fluency, ensuring they are ready to lead in any sector upon graduation.”
Starting in Fall 2027, the Cockrell-McCombs B.S./M.S. Honors Program will equip students with a wide range of skills and experiences. Throughout the program, engineering and business coursework complement each other, allowing students to build both skill sets simultaneously.
Both the Cockrell School and McCombs are among the top schools in the nation in their respective disciplines. Students accepted into the highly competitive program will be eligible for dedicated scholarships.
Students will participate in a study abroad experience during their first year, gaining valuable international business and cultural exposure. Multiple internships throughout the program, including a hands-on engineering internship and a career-focused business internship, ensure graduates have real-world experience before entering the workforce.
“This program is about more than just earning two degrees — it’s about shaping leaders who can drive change at the intersection of technology and business,” said Bradley R. Staats, dean of the McCombs School of Business and a Cockrell School alumnus. “I know the value of blending engineering and business skills personally, and our students will graduate with the analytical mindset of an engineer and the strategic vision of a business leader, ready to tackle the world’s most complex challenges from day one.”
The Cockrell-McCombs B.S./M.S. Honors Program seeks students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, a strong interest in both engineering and business, leadership potential, and the drive to make an impact at scale. The program is open to incoming first-year students admitted to mechanical engineering or petroleum engineering, and all participants must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA to remain in the program.
Prospective students can apply to the program and the related honors program as part of their UT Austin application starting Aug. 1. Admission is highly competitive and limited in size, ensuring that each cohort receives personalized attention and support.
